Commissioners Street Transfer Station: hours, fees and what it takes
The City of Toronto runs a drop-off depot at 400 Commissioners Street. This page covers its hours, fees, accepted items and the repair delays posted for late 2026. We are a private junk removal company, not the City.

Address, hours and fees at a glance
Commissioners Street is one of the City of Toronto's seven drop-off depots. The City lists the others under North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough, and this one under Toronto. The facts below are from the City's pages as of October 2026. Hours and fees can change, so check the City's page or call 311 before you load up.
Two sets of hours apply. The household hazardous waste and electronic waste area keeps its own hours, and it is the only part open on Saturday.

How the weigh-in and fees work here
You drive onto the scale, declare what you are dropping, and pay a deposit of at least $40. After you unload you return to the scale, and the City works out the net weight and the final fee. You get a refund or pay the difference. Scales read in 5 kg steps, so 102 kg rounds to 100 kg and 103 kg rounds to 105 kg.
Garbage and renovation waste are charged at $189.86 per tonne, with a $19 minimum covering the first 100 kg. The City's own examples: 205 kg of garbage costs $38.92, and 800 kg costs $151.88. Past the first 100 kg the City states the rate as $1 per 5.27 kg. Treat any figure as a guide, because the scale decides the final fee.
Mattresses, metal and yard waste are cheaper by weight at $142.40 per tonne. For example, 105 kg of mattresses costs $14.96. Metal and yard waste under 20 kg is free, but a load over 20 kg is charged on its full weight.
If your vehicle carries separate loads of garbage and recycling, you must return to the scale after each type. Otherwise the fee is worked out at the highest material rate. Mixed loads of garbage and recycling are denied entry.
The full explanation of how a depot visit works, the resident rules and the fee structure for all seven depots is on our guide to Toronto's drop-off depots.
What Commissioners Street accepts
The City lists these items for this depot. Fees apply to garbage, renovation waste and mattresses, and to metal and yard waste over 20 kg.
- Garbage
- Yard waste, with pieces no thicker than 7.5 cm and no longer than 1.2 m
- Renovation waste, including clean drywall up to 1 tonne
- Metal: appliances, tools, pipes, cable, bicycles, auto parts and lawnmowers
- Mattresses
- Household hazardous waste, free, up to 50 litres or 50 kg per drop-off
- Electronic waste, free
- Blue Bin items up to 200 kg as site capacity allows, from commercial properties, charities, institutions, religious groups and City departments only
Mattresses
Commissioners Street and Dufferin are the only two depots that take mattresses. The City says to bring them unwrapped and unbound, except mattresses with bed bugs, which should be wrapped in plastic. Commercial loads are not accepted. The fee is $142.40 per tonne.
City residents can also set a mattress out for curbside collection as an oversized item, which saves the drive.
Drywall and renovation waste
Commissioners Street is one of three depots that take clean drywall, along with Bermondsey and Ingram. The limit is 1 tonne. Pull out nails, screws, metal corner beads, ceramics and wood first.
Other renovation waste the City lists includes baseboards, bathtubs, cabinets, countertops, doors, fencing, insulation, plaster, pressure treated wood, roof shingles, siding and tiles. Lumber must be 4 feet or shorter. Fees apply to all of it.
The City's separate prohibited waste page also lists construction waste such as drywall and scrap metal, which contradicts the accepted items and locations pages. We follow the more specific pages above, which list clean drywall and metal as accepted here. Call 311 if you are unsure about your load.
Blue Bin recycling
Since January 1, 2026, City depots take recycling only from commercial properties, charities, institutions, religious groups and City departments. Homes use curbside collection for recycling. Do not combine garbage and recycling in one load.
What gets turned away
These items are on the City's not accepted list for all depots, including this one. The City tells people to contact a private company for them.
- Concrete, cinder blocks, bricks, paving stones, stones and rocks
- Asphalt, gravel, soil and sand
- Asbestos
- Sod and grass clippings
- Boats, ammunition and dead animals
- Tires, which the City is not accepting at depots until further notice
Paint, propane and chemicals
These do not go in the garbage or on the tipping floor. They go to the household hazardous waste area, which is free and has its own hours. Paint and propane tanks are on the City's household hazardous waste list. Cars drive straight to the hazardous waste area without weighing in, following the signs.
Daily limits apply: no more than 50 litres or 50 kg in total, and no more than 5 gas tanks. Our household hazardous waste guide covers the Toxic Taxi pickup and the depots that take it.
Entry rules and the repair delays
A safe motorized vehicle is required. Walk-ins, bicycles and manual transportation devices are not allowed. Loads must be secured and covered with a tarp or an acceptable alternative, and unsafe vehicles or unsecured loads are refused at the gate.
On site, only the driver leaves the vehicle in the unloading area, and you unload the items yourself. The City calls its depots industrial locations and recommends protective equipment. Follow the signs and the staff directions.
The City says to expect delays at Commissioners Street from October 26 to December 18, 2026, because of tipping floor repairs. It asks people to allow extra time or consider another location.
Holiday hours differ. The City lists all sites as open on Remembrance Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026, and closed on Friday, December 25, 2026 and Friday, January 1, 2027. Check the City's holiday page before a long weekend.
If Commissioners Street cannot take it
Pick the nearest depot that matches what you have. Which depot is nearest depends on where you start from, so work that out for your own address.
- Dufferin takes mattresses and general garbage on weekdays but no hazardous waste or electronics.
- Bermondsey takes clean drywall, hazardous waste and electronics. For general items it runs 24 hours from Monday at 6 a.m. until Friday at 9 p.m., with a pause from 11:30 p.m. to midnight.
| You have | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mattresses | Commissioners Street or Dufferin | Only these two depots take them |
| Clean drywall | Commissioners Street, Bermondsey or Ingram | The other depots do not take drywall |
| Paint, propane, batteries | Commissioners Street, or Bermondsey, Ingram, Scarborough or Victoria Park. Disco has paused it for repairs to October 26, so check first | Dufferin does not take household hazardous waste |
| A load on a Saturday | Bermondsey, Ingram or Scarborough | They list general hours on Saturday morning, and this depot's main site is closed |
| Concrete, brick, soil | A private company | No City depot takes them |
The other option: we load it and haul it
On fees alone, a depot costs less. The City's example of 800 kg of garbage is about $152. What you add is the vehicle, the loading, a tarp, the unloading, the wait at the scale and, this autumn, the repair delays. If you do not have a vehicle, or the items are heavy, that is the real cost.
We load it and haul it away across Toronto and the GTA, priced by the load before 13% HST. The minimum pickup for 1 to 2 items is $119, a 1/4 load is $259, a 1/2 load is $389, a 3/4 load is $499 and a full load of about 16 cubic yards is $599. A full load includes 1,000 kg, and weight over the allowance is $200 per tonne.
If everything is already outside at ground level and ready to load, you take 10% off the load price. Same-day service is plus $50 when the schedule allows. Send photos for a quote, and we confirm the volume on site. We are insured, and we try to recycle what we can.
A single mattress is $99 and a mattress with its box spring is $149. See mattress removal in Toronto. For downtown addresses, see junk removal in downtown Toronto.
We do not take hazardous waste: paint, propane, chemicals or asbestos. Take those to the City's hazardous waste area, which is free.
| Line | City depot | Issa |
|---|---|---|
| Price | About $152 for 800 kg of garbage | $499 for a 3/4 load, 750 kg included, before HST |
| Vehicle needed | Yours, with the load secured and covered | Ours |
| Loading and carrying | You | We do it |
| Scheduling | Weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with delays posted | Quote from photos, then we book a time |
